Use of a New Collagen Matrix in Augmenting Keratinized Tissues: Report of Three Cases

Abstract
The aim of this case report is to evaluate whether the newly developed porcine-derived collagen matrix (PCM) is an acceptable alternative to autogenous soft tissue graft for widening keratinized tissue zone, at mandibular posterior region. Three patients, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, were selected from the Department of Periodontology at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea. Each patient received keratinized tissue augmentation surgeries by using the PCM. At the baseline and 3, 6, 12 months of follow-up visits, the following data and measurements were recorded: gender, sex, tooth, probing pocket depth, keratinized tissue width, modified gingival index (mGI), and plaque index (PI). Clinical photographs were also taken at each visit. Twelve months after the surgeries, the mean width of increased keratinized tissue was 2.40¡¾0.74 mm. The mean graft contraction rate was 68.42%¡¾7.47%. PI and mGI values showed slight decreases. Newly formed tissues were excellent in esthetics. PCM works as a great alternative to autograft when aiming to increase the KT widths and to deepen the vestibule at mandibular posterior regions.
